Mr. John P. Spaulding a famous philanthropist was a dear friend of Helen Keller, the blind and deaf American author. Helen, in her biography "The Story of My Life talks about John P. Spaulding and says that only those who knew him well enough, would know and understand what John's friendship meant to Helen. She said, John was a person who made everyone around him happy and was especially kind and considerate to Miss Sullivan and Helen. They both were encouraged greatly by his presence and his interest in their work. Helen goes on to say that John's death in 1896 left a huge vacuum in her life.

His love and watchful interest provided comfort to Helen and helped her to fight the difficulties she faced. She was very sad when he passed away. According to Helen Mr. Spaulding was a person whose friendship could be understood and appreciated by those who knew and loved him.
