20% of the remaining amount to each of his 3 sons.

Percentage of the money given to wife = 40%

Find the remaining amount left after giving to his wife in percentage:

100 - 40 = 60%

Percentage of money given to the 3 sons:

20% of 60% = 0.2 x 60 = 12%

1 son  = 12%

3 sons = 12 x 3 = 36%

Find the remaining amount left after giving to his 3 sons in percentage:

60 - 36 = 24%

Find the remaining percentage after spending on miscellaneous items:

1/2 x 24% = 0.5 x 24 =12%

Find the money he had originally:

Percentage of money left = 12%

Amount of money left = Rs 12000

12% = 12000

1% = 12000 ÷ 12 = Rs 1000

100% = 1000 x 100 = Rs 100,000

Answer: He had Rs 100,000 initially.
