Let us assume that total amount of money with Mr Joshi was x.  

Mr Joshi bequeathed $\frac{1}{3}$ of his money to his son. This can be written as

Money with son $=\frac{x}{3}$

Mr Joshi bequeathed $\frac{1}{5}$ of his money to his daughter. This can be written as

Money with daughter $=\frac{x}{5}$

Hence, the share of wife will be $=x-\frac{x}{3}-\frac{x}{5}$ who got Rs.42000/-.

Thus,  

$x-\left(\frac{x}{3}+\frac{x}{5}\right)=42000$

$x-\frac{5 x-3 x}{15}=42000$

$\frac{15 x-8 x}{15}=42000$

$7 x=42000 \times 15$

$7 \mathrm{x}=630000$

$\mathrm{x}=90000$

Hence, the total amount with Mr Joshi was Rs.90,000/-.
