Mr. Kumar while to his office first goes 5km towards south to drop his mother at a temple then he turns and goes 12km towards east. Calculate total distance covered and Net displacement Mr. Kumar

At first, he goes 5km towards south, then he goes 12 km towards east.

Therefore , total distance covered= 12km + 5km = 17km

Net displacement is the distance between the final position and the initial position.

As seen in the diagram, in order to find the net displacement we need to find the hypotenuse( length of AC).

AC^2 = AB^2 + BC^2

So, AC^2 = 5^2 + 12^2 = 169 km

So, AC= 13km

Answer: The total distance is 17km and the net displacement is 13km.
