Amount spent on dog treats -   x/5

Left-   x-x/5 = 4x/5

Divided in three-  4x/5/3 = 4x/15 (which is the amount given to each charity)

Now, as stated, each charity got $60

4x/15 = 60    

or     x = 225

Thus, the money Mr. Scruggs received was $225
