The crops use many minerals present in the soil to grow and survive. During crop rotation, a major amount of the minerals and nutrients famish from the soil, that is they become less in quantity. It is advised to plant legumes after cereal crops in crop rotation because a bacterium called Rhizobium lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants. The function of this bacteria is to convert atmospheric nitrogen into its compounds and fix them in the soil. This makes the soil highly fertile and suitable for growing crops.
