Mr. Sudeep Bhattacharya, a 70 year old male, is admitted to Vortex Hospital’s Intensive care unit (ICU) with acute respiratory disorder. When he was admitted Mr. Bhattacharya was breathing at 40 breaths a minute. He was stabilized by giving oxygen after which his breathing reduced to 25 breaths a minute and his condition improved.
On speaking to Mr. Bhattacharya, the doctor found out the patient had worked in a Chemical Paint factory all his life and that he had also been a chain smoker for 25 years but had left smoking about 10 years ago. In his youth he had been an avid swimmer but he had abandoned that activity over 30 years back. He generally suffers from chronic (continuing) cough.
a). Why do you think the patient’s breaths per minute reduced after he was given oxygen?
b). His reports mentioned that he was in this condition primarily because of his lifestyle choices. List out 2 lifestyle choices and explain how each choice impacted his health?
