Mr. Toledo keeps chickens in his backyard. He has a chicken pen with a 48 square foot floor.

What are all the possible dimensions of this chicken pen if it has to be rectangular and only uses whole foot measurements?

What are the perimeters of each of these possible chicken pens?

After finding all the possible chicken pen dimensions, which one is the best one for his chickens and why? (Think about making the most space for happy chickens to roam around).

If instead of feet, Mr. Toledo’s were to construct a chicken pen with the dimensions of 2 yards by 3 yards, would this chicken pen have the same area floor as the one described above? Show your work.

Given :  chicken pen with a 48 square foot floor.

To find :  perimeters of each of these possible chicken pens

Solution:

Floor Area  = 48 Sq foot

                          Perimeter

48  = 1 * 48        2(1 + 48)  = 98

48 = 2 * 24        2(2 + 24)  = 52

48 = 3 * 16        2(3 + 16)  = 38

48 = 4 * 12         2(4 + 12)  =  32

48 = 6 * 8          2(6 + 8)  = 28

dimensions of 2 yards by 3 yards

1 Yard = 3 foot

2 Yard = 6 foot

3 Yard  = 9 foot

hence Dimension would have been 6 foot * 9 foot

Floor area = 54 sq foot

2 yards by 3 yards would have been more floor area than 48 Sq foot
