Answer:

Mrs Ali bought 8 apples

Step-by-step explanation:

Apples & Pears: 15 Total

Total Price: $7.40

1 Apple: 0.40

1 Pear: 0.60

a = apple

p = pear

Solve system of equation

a + p = 15

.40a + .60p = 7.40

-.60(a+p) = -.60(15) = -.60a-.60p = -9

combine both equation

.40a + .60p = 7.40 +  -.60a-.60p = -9

= -.20a = -1.6

a = -1.6/-.20

a = 8

a = 8

p = 7 (note p/pears is not needed but to find p just plug in a=8 to the original equation and solve for p)
