Homer's description of the Wooing of Penelope is more comprehensible if we perceive it to be so constructed that the suitors are, mechanically speaking, tragic heroes of the Aristotelian type. Their actions and fate are largely fictitious and literary. In his treatment of the wooers Homer frequently sacrifices character to plot, even placing the steadfastness of Penelope in question. He has displayed an inclination, however, to keep the improbabilities outside the limits of the poem. The key to understanding the relation of the wooers to the entire fabric of the Odyssey lies in Aristotle's remark that, at the close of the epic, the good and the wicked receive their just deserts.
