Mrs. Jain is 27 years older than her daughter Nilu. After 8 years she will be twice as old as Nilu. Find their present ages.

Given: Age of Mrs. Jain = Age of her daughter Nilu + 27

          after 8 years, age of Mrs. Jain = 2 × age of Nilu

To find: Present ages of Mrs. Jain and Nilu

Let: Present age of Mrs. Jain = X years

       Present age of Nilu = Y years

Solution: According to the given question,

               X = Y + 27                                       ...(1)

   also, X + 8 = 2 × Y   OR  X = 2Y - 8           ...(2)

[X and Y are the present ages of Mrs. Jain and Nilu respectively]

Comparing equation (1) and (2)

      2Y - 8 = Y + 27       [X = 2Y - 8 and X = Y + 27 as well]

      2Y -Y = 27 + 8

            Y = 35

Hence, present age of Nilu is 35 years

Putting value of Y = 35 in equation (1)

      X = 35 + 27 = 62

So, present age of Mrs. Jain is 62 years
