The short story 'The Necklace' by Guy de Maupassant is one of the most famous short stories of the world. Not only a sad story but it is also a very thought provoking story.
The central character of the story is Madame Loisel. She is a woman of exquisite beauty. Born of a poor family she is married to a simple and petty clerk who provides her a very ordinary standard of life.
Mrs. Loisel is aware of her beauty and despises her husband. She dreams of leading a glamorous life flaunting her beauty and attracting rich suitors.
However she proves to be a good wife when she loses the necklace she had borrowed from her rich friend Madame Forestier . She proves to be an honest woman and sacrifices all her little pleasures and luxuries to collect the money to replace the necklace.
Her honesty is asserted through her hard work and her negligence towards her beauty there after. Since she assumes the necklace to be made of diamond she honestly tries to replace it.
Madame Forestier is her rich friend who lends her the necklace. The lady is not as beautiful as her poor friend but she is extremely wealthy. When Mrs. Loisel asked her for a necklace she had generously opened her jewellery box to her.
She was honest about the necklace that it was not an original one. When Mrs. Loisel told her that she was responsible for her sorry plight trying to replace the diamond necklace . Mrs.Forestier honestly admitted that it was not an original diamond necklace but an imitation.
Thus both the women were honest about the necklace.
