Mrs Pumphrey was overly caring and spoiled her dog with her love and riches. She always gave Tricki whatever he wished for, and got everything done for him without him even lifting a finger. Everything was served with a silver spoon and on a gold platter for him.
The seagull’s mother, on the other hand, was in the real world and understood the necessity of being independent and self sufficient. She urged the seagull to get over his fears. She didn’t give the seagull everything he wanted but showed humility a way through which he can obtain what he wants/needs.
They are contrasting as Tricki is pampered overly and is not trained as to how to live independently. The seagull, on the other hand, is being trained to live and sustain for himself, and if needed others, in the living world.
