This is a concept of applied chemistry. Mrs. Rushing fills a balloon with hydrogen gas to demonstrate its ability to burn. Which combination could she use to produce the hydrogen she needs?

Answer to the question is: She needs Zn and H2SO4. It is for the reason active metal liberate hydrogen gas on reaction with diulute acids. So the reaction will be: Zn + H2SO4 --> ZnSO4 + H2. Out of the following combination of NaOH and oil; Zn and KOH, H2SO4 and CaCO3, Mg and HCl, Mrs. Rushing can use Zinc (Zn0 and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) to attain the hydrogen gas to fill up the balloon.

When these two reacts, zinc gets oxidized and potassium hydroxide gets reduced, as a result the hydrogen gas is released.

The equation is - ZN + 2 KOH = K2ZNO2 + H2.
