Given: Mrs. Santiago, the science teacher, collected 12 sedimentary rocks and 18 metamorphic rocks. Now she wants to create some identical kits for studying rocks, without having any rocks left over.

To find: Greatest number of kits she can create

Solution: Number of sedimentary rocks= 12

Number of metamorphic rocks= 18

Highest common factor (HCF) is the greatest factor of the given numbers which does not leave any remainder on division.

Therefore, for finding the greatest number of kits that she can create, we need to find the HCF of 12 and 18.

For that we list the factors of both the numbers.

Factors of 12= 1,2,3,4,6,12

Factors of 18= 1,2,3,6,9,18

Clearly, 6 is the HCF of both the numbers.

Now, 12/6= 2 and 18/6= 3.

Therefore, Mrs. Santiago can keep 2 sedimentary rocks and 3 metamorphic rocks without having any rocks left over.

Therefore, the greatest number of kits that Mrs. Santiago can make is 6.
