Ms. Rosy is the coordinator of class X. She is conducting a seminar for her students on
“Time management skills”. She planned to make the students sit with chairs & desks
arranged in rows and columns.

But she found that, if 4 students are extra in each row then there would be 2 rows less and if 4
students are less in each row then there would be 4 rows more.

a) If we represent no of rows by x and number of students in each row by y (no of columns),
which of the following pair of equations represents the given situation:
(i) 2x-y = 4 , x - y = 4
(ii) 2x-y = 4 , x + y=- 4
(iii) 2x- y = 4 , y - x = 4
(iv) 2x+y = 4 , x - y = 4
b) Number of rows:
(i) 8
(ii) 12
(iii) 16
(iv) 18
c). Number of columns:
(i) 16
(ii) 30
(iii) 12
(iv) 14
d) Total number of students:
(i) 48
(ii) 96
(iii) 24
(iv) 36
e) In how many ways can the rows and columns be arranged in the above situation?
(i) one
(ii) four
(iii) five
(iv) infinite
