base^{2}  + leg ^{2}  = hypotenuse^{2}

so, base = x

leg=5cm

hypotenuse =13cm

 {x}^{2}  +  {5}^{2}  =  {13}^{2}

 {x}^{2}  + 25 = 169

 {x}^{2}  = 169 - 25

 {x}^{2}  = 144

x =  \sqrt{144} (power \: changes \: to \:root)

x = 12

so, the base =12cm
