Mt. Everest, the highest elevation in Asia, is 29,028 feet above sea level. The Dead Sea, the
lowest elevation, is 1,312 feet below sea level. Mauna Kea is an inactive volcano on the
island of Hawaii. Only 13,795 feet of Mauna Kea stands above sea level, and below the sea
level its having a depth of 19,685 feet.
a) What is the difference between the two elevations Mount Everest and Dead sea?
b) Evaluate the actual height of Mauna Kea from below the sea level.
c) Compare the actual height of Mauna Kea with the height of Mount Everest and find
which is taller and by how much?

Answer:

a) Elevation of Mt. Everest = 29,028 feet

Elevation of Dead Sea = 1,312 feet

Therefore, Difference of the two elevations =

(29028-1312) ft = 27,716ft

b) Height of mauna kea above sea level= 13,795ft

Depth of mauna kea below sea level= 19,685ft

Therefore, total height of mauna kea =

(13795+19685) ft = 33,480ft

c) height of mauna kea = 33,480ft

Height of Mt Everest = 29,028 ft

Therefore, Difference of heights =

(33480-29028) ft= 4,452ft
