'Mucus' is secreted by the gastric glands and salivary glands during digestion to aid the process of digestion.

Mucus secreted by salivary glands:

  • The mucus secreted by saliva performs the function of lubricating the food so that it can be easily broken down and chewed.
  • The mucus of salivary glands breaks the starch into sugars.

Mucus secreted by gastric glands:

  • Mucus secreted by the gastric glands prevents the walls of stomach from the action of HCL.
  • Gastric glands secrete juices that contain pepsin to convert proteins into peptons.
  • The gastric glands also secrete HCL that helps to digest proteins and kill microbes.
