The author Marga Minco says this line when she visits her house long time after the war to get her mother's belongings and finds that her neighbour Mrs. Dorling, along with her daughter, had started living in that house(46, Marconi Street) where she and her mother lived before the war took place. Mrs. Dorling used to be very good friends of Mrs.S but she deceives her and keeps all her belongings after the war as Mrs. Dorling took the whole family to be dead during the war. The narrator found herself midst of things she was familiar with but did not want to see them again because the belongings kept in the room were Marga's(narrator) belongings and reminded her of the loss she had to bear due to the war(her mother, her belongings, her house). Marga feels cheated when she sees Mrs. Dorling using her precious belongings (like expensive silver crockeries) for daily use without her permission
