Each of eight rounds held represented a discrete and lenghty series of bargaining sessions among the participating contracting.parties in search of mutually beneficial agreements aimed at reducing barriers to world trade .
The agreements aimed at reached at the conclusion of each round became new GATT commitments and thus amounted important steps in the evolution of the world trading system . The Uruguay Round resulted in the establishment in 1995 of the world Trade organization (WTO).
