  • When a red blood cell is placed in a solution containing lower water concentration (solution of 0.45% NaCl), the water moves into the cell by endosmosis and the cell swells up and may burst.
  • Such a solution containing lower water potential than the solution inside the cell is called a Hypotonic solution.
  • In a hypertonic solution, the water moves out of the cell, leading to it shrink.
