Muscular fibers shrinks if oxygen is not supplied properly because when three molecules of carbon break down into glucose in the lack of oxygen then lactic acid and co2 is formed which results in muscular fibres shrink.

If oxygen is not available, pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid, which may contribute to muscle fatigue. This occurs during strenuous exercise when high amounts of energy are needed but oxygen cannot be sufficiently delivered to muscle.
