Muscularis layer in stomach is thicker:

  • Muscularis layer in the stomach is thicker than that in the intestine because of the fact that HCl(Hydrochloric acid) is present in the stomach and also 'faeces are large and heavy', requiring more force to push along.
  • This Muscularis layer is responsible for 'segmental contractions and peristaltic movements' in the GI tract.
  • A layer of myenteric or Auerbach’s plexus is present between the layers which control the peristalsis.
  • The stomach portion of the gastrointestinal part has to churn the chyme and this particular function is being with the help of an extra layer only called muscularis.
