Mustafa’s soccer team is planning a school dance as a fundraiser. The DJ charges $200 and decorations cost $100. The team decides to charge each student $5.00 to attend the dance. If n represents the number of students attending the dance, which equation can be used to find the number of students needed to make $1,500 in profit?

lets first calculate cost for dance event

Cost = DJ Charges + Decoration Cost = 200 + 100 = $300

Now lets calculate Funds which can be raised

Charge for 1 student = $5

so charge for n students = 5 × n = 5n

So fund which can be raised by n students = 5n

Profit = Fund raised - Cost

for profit of $1500

1500 = 5n - 300

⇒ 5n = 1500-300 = 1200

so 5n - 1200 = 0 is an equation , which can be used to calculate n

5n - 1200 = 0

⇒ 5n = 1200

⇒ n = 1200/5 = 240

hence number of student required is 240 and equation is 5n - 1200 = 0

Thank you for asking this question:

Here is your answer: If the cost is $200 for the DJ and $100 for decoration,

then the total cost will be $ $300.

If they want to make a NET profit of $1,500, then they have to sell for a total  amount of $300 + $1,500 = $ 1,800

Ton cover their expenses and to generate a net profit of $1500, they will need n students paying $5 each:

n = 1800/5 = 360 students
