Mutations are completely random mistakes that occur in the DNA sequence of organisms. The theory goes that these mistakes sometimes fluke a mutation in the organism that makes it better adapted to its environment. This improves its chances of survival and reproduction and the offspring who potentially receive this same advantage continue to multiply the benefit. This is called Natural selection and we have seen this occur from time to time in bacteria, viruses and also animals, (Darwin's finches and turtles)that part is uncontroversial… However this process also gets the credit for the entire diversity of life from single celled bacteria to man. This is generally accepted as FACT but has almost NEVER been confirmed in the field or in the lab.

Mutations are changes in the DNA. A single mutation can have a large effect, but in many cases, evolutionary change is based on the accumulation of manymutations. Gene flow is any movement of genes from one population to another and is an important source of genetic variation.
