My African dwarf frog keeps getting sucked into the filter so I put a mesh covering over it but it then stopped working so what should I do?

No it will not so long as the filter intake has the proper covering over it (there is usually one included with the filter) it covers the open tube of the filter intake with a mesh-like cover.
