Several thousands of animals were sacrificed at this festival, held once every five years at the Gadhimai Temple, in the Bara district of Nepal. The animals sacrificed included, water buffaloes, goats, chicken etc. and the sacrifice was held for pleasing goddess Gadhimai.

Following uproar and petitions from animal rights activists and Hindu religious leaders, over this inhuman practise of slaughtering helpless, tied-up animals, it is reported to have been discontinued by the Nepal Temple Trust, since 2014.
