why does ice float on water?

The reason is that ice is actually about 9% less dense than water. Since the water is heavier, it displaces the lighter ice, causing the ice to float to the top.

Ice floats on water because density of ice is less than density of water...
Density of ice=0.916g/cm^3
Density of water=1g/cm^3
