There was a thread about this same question some time back, and there was a lack of consensus among native English speakers as to which form is acceptable. But I would say that the following are correct, or at least commonly used.

My favorite animal is the dog.

My favorite animal is dogs.

Dogs are my favorite animal.

Some will say that the second one is incorrect because it lacks agreement in number between verb and noun, but my view is that in such a case, "dogs" is treated as the name of a group, and therefore can be used as a singular noun.
