My favourite leader is Mahatma Gandhi. He is called the ‘Father of the Nation’. He was born on 2nd October, 1869 at Coriander in Gujarat. His full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the Diwan of Rajkot. His mother Putli Bai, was a simple and religious lady. Gandhi completed his early education at Rajkot. Then he went to England. He returned to India as a barrister. He went to South Africa.He fought for the rights of the Indians living there. He left his practice as a lawyer and worked for the freedom of India. He went to jail several times. He believed in truth and non¬violence.
He worked for Harijans throughout his life. He worked for Hindu-Muslim unity and rural upliftment. He started movements like “Satyagrah”, “Non-cooperation Movement”, “Quit India Movement” and “Salt Satyagrah”. He won freedom for India from the British rule on 15th August 1947.
