The title of my review may seem a little biased for I grew up in that city. But having lived out of Bhubaneswar for 22 years now, I still love the city and find it exciting every time I visit.
It is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India; it's earliest recorded reference going back to the war fought by emperor Ashok(circa 250 BC) and as the place where Ashok denounced violence and took up Budhdhism in right ernest.
The city is flanked on one side by a small hill called Dhauligiri and it is the place where the fabled Kalinga war was fought. Today it houses a Shanti Stupa (peace pagoda) built by Japanese Budhdhists. On the other side is a pair of hills, Khandagiri and Udaygiri that reflect Jainism and house caves where another significant emperor, Kharavela lived with his queens as an ascetic after taking sanyas.
In between lies the city of temples, with several towering structures of exquisite workmanship and numerous ruins of old temples. There is also the modern city with its quota of IT companies, educational institutions, palnetarium, wide roads and shopping areas.
The city has several hotels to cater to all budgets, a number of good quality restaurants and it is only an hour's drive from Puri and Konark, about two hours drive from Chilika lake, about three hours drive from Bhitar Kanika estuarian crocodile sanctuary. Right outside the city is the Chandaka elephant sanctuary and Nandankanan, arguably the prettiest zoo in India where white tigers were first bred in captivity. In all the city would appeal to those looking for history, architecture, religious pilgrims (Hindus, Budhdhists and Jains) and even to those who wish to laze around and relax.
