To me, listening to music is not just a hobby but a way of learning too. It has taught me how to understand myself, how to connect with others and how to be open to other cultures.
No matter what your mood is, there is always some suitable music for it. There are soft numbers for sad moments, chirpy songs for happy times, relaxing music for when I am tired and motivating songs to keep me going when I exercise. Sometimes it is the type of music I like that helps me understand my mood, because there is music for each state of the human mind.
Also, music has helped me connect better with so many people. I am able to spend more time with my grandmother because I too enjoy listening to old Hindi classics like she does. My friends and I enjoy talking about the latest songs by Taylor Swift, while I listen to Sufi songs with my father. Music certainly brings people together.
Over time I have realised that listening to different kinds of music makes you aware of different cultures. Sufi music encouraged me to read about Sufi saints and their thinking. Michael Jackson’s songs openly challenged racism and opened my eyes to Black and White culture as they were then.
Listening to music is like a balm to my heart and food for my brain. I can pick anything out of a song, even a word and learn about it.
So, listening to music is deeper than it seems.
