Answer:

My intellectual journey through my time at college has been one that I have thoroughly enjoyed, even on late nights when I was typing lab reports. When I started college, I knew that I wanted to study the interplay between human society and the natural world. I have always thrived in the place between disciplines and this endeavor was the result of a curiosity that I had been following all over the world. I longed to see how other cultures interacted with their environment and I Love being a part of helping people engage with the environment here at home. When I first went to college, I had no idea what the application for my study would be. I thought I wanted to be a geographer and make maps. I quickly learned that a meaningful life for me is one where I can be a part of the communities I interact with, not just observing from the outside. Place-Based Education as a major became an option for me when I finally allowed myself to acknowledge the Love that I have for teaching children and the access they give us to the larger community. If we can reach children to be advocates for our community, then we can reach their families as well. I dream of a world where the school is the pride of the community. Citizens come in to teach workshops to the children and class projects reach outside the classroom to affect real people. I took this idea of “a classroom without walls” and ran with it, I let my curiosity take me. Some of my favorite classes have been ones that don’t pertain to education. Such as “facing beasts” which is a history class about animals through the ages. It has been fascinating! It pushes me to think outside the realm that I feel comfortable, as have my science classes. Even though they have been tricky, I hold so much value in the classes that I feel pushed me hard to be a better learner. I often tell people that my most proud moment in college was when I taught myself statistics in order to pass my ecology class. Another thing that I admire about my IDS degree is that I have been able to reshape it as I have been working in my field. I added more education classes when I realized that I was missing a proficiency at standardized lesson design. As I stand at the end of my undergraduate years I can see that I am so different from the freshman I was three years ago, I know she would be so unbelievably proud of the person I am today. I also know that I have so much more learning that I want to do, I have all the skills necessary to do so.
