You can reset your password

Go to the webpage https://iforgot.apple.com

Enter your email address and click to Continue.

Select “I need to reset my password” and click the Continue password.

Then select how you want to reset your Apple password, whether via an email address or using your security questions.

Just fill out the lookup tool’s fields and if it can find an Apple ID it’ll then lock up that account and walk you through resetting the password to the account. Succeeding in resetting the password will then release the account back to you, allowing you to sign into the iPhone and lift the Activation Lock it is currently in.

Resetting Passwords

Apple has gone through several security system designs that may make this difficult, depending on how maintained the account was and if you have access to the required resources for your authentication level.

The oldest and least secure versions will require answering one or two security questions; the answers are case sensitive.

The previous process is not as user-friendly as wished, and I can’t recall the details at this time. It was known as Two Step Authentication.

The current and best version is Two Factor Authentication. This will require two of three possible requirements be met.

access to a currently signed in iOS or macOS device to receive a one time use 6 digit code.

access to a trusted phone number to receive either a text message or phone for a one-time use 6 digit code.

lastly, Account Recovery process. This involves getting a text message or email with steps to recover regain entry to the account. The amount of time it takes for the first of two messages to be sent to you varies and is affected by a ton of factors. It can be a short as 48 hours, or as long as 3 months (usually is soon). Once you receive the first message, it will tell you the recovery message will (I think) let you schedule the sending time of the actual recovery message (minimum 24-hour scheduling). This is the best deterrent for account hackers trying to use social engineering as their fulcrum to getting the upper hand as it’s too tedious for follow through. Especially for mass hackers who need many account entries to gain what it is they are searching for.

If Account Entry Is Not Possible

There is still one last option, but it’s the hail-Mary.

Last option is to call AppleCare support and work with an agent, they’ll verify the steps taken so far by you and what the outcome was, and they may even walk you through some of it to double check.

Once they can validate a less fractious path does not exist, they can build a case for the iCloud Engineer team to review and send a total format request to the iPhone.

The process is called Proof of Ownership and is only there for customers who did not understand the levity at which Apple takes when securing personally identifiable information and privacy of users.

This will require that you locate the sales receipt from an authorized Apple reseller. This receipt will need to be photographed, with the serial number and IMEI handwritten on it, and uploaded to Apple through a temporary document uploaded URL that they will provide you with (it connects to your case directly).

The engineers will begin researching things like the limited warranty’s activation date versus the purchase date, and many other factors to determine the legitimacy of your claim.

Once they can say they have done their due diligence, they’ll send the reformation request to the iPhone that will completely wipe all data ever written into the iPhone that is not hardware linked (serial, model number, IMEI, etc.). You’ll get an email asking to restart the iPhone when it has a connection to data (the internet) - you’ll need your SIM Card in it. This causes the iPhone to reverify Activation Lock status, at which point it will receiving the pending timed reformat request and begin the process.
