My mother only said thank God the scorpion picked on me and spared my children. 1) what light do these lines throw on the character of poet 'so mother ? 2) explain the phrase 'picked on me' .

1. In the above lines, the mother's character is seen as selfless, kind, loving, bravehearted. It is also seen that she was not worried about herself, instead she was happy that she was stung by the scorpion., not her children. This lines also reflects the sacrifice of a mother and the unconditional love and care of a mother for her children.

2. By the phrase, 'picked on me' in the above lines, it is meant that the scorpion stung/hurt the mother rather than the children. It is just a substitute used for choosing someone.
