My mother tongue poem vallathol English summary:
One of the "modern trio poets" of Malayalam, Vallathol Narayana Menon, wrote the poem "My Mother Tongue" (original title: "Ente Bhasha") (the other two are Kumaran Asan, and Ulloor S Parameswara Iyer). Vallathol, a genuine patriot, produced several poems as well as the "mahakavya" called Chitrayogam. Vallathol founded the renowned Kerala Kalamandalam, which was another contribution to the growth of Keralan art.
The poem "Ente Bhasha" must be understood in light of India's rising nationalism. India attained independence in 1947 after decades of the battle for independence. Based on the "Vallabhai Patel Plan," the newly elected government did not divide the states along linguistic lines. There were protests and initiatives to create states based on linguistic distinctions all throughout India. The Aikya Kerala Movement was founded in Kerala as well to establish a state for communities that speak Malayali. Malabar was a part of the Madras Presidency at the time, and the Thiru-Kochi state existed at the time.
The Aikya Kerala Movement was backed by both poets and political organizations, and Vallathol's "Ente Bhasha" may be seen as a forceful declaration of the need of having pride in one's home tongue. To arouse the patriotic spirit of Malayalis, he asks,
If we do not weave into our own tongue
Threads of varied thoughts,
What other cord is there to lift
Our land from this pitch-dark pit?
My Mother Tongue, Vallathol, trans. Vyloppilli
Those who read these lines would definitely consider the importance of enhancing one's native tongue. The poem might be understood as the product of a subnational sensibility developed in the Malayalam language if we contextualize it in the aftermath of the Aikya Kerala Movement.
