In English the sentences are active and passive.

Voice is the form of the verb which donates whether the subject does the work or something is done to the subject.

There are two types of voice :-

• Active voice

• Passive voice

Active voice :-

When subject does something in a sentence it is said to be in Active voice.

➩ Subject + Verb + Object

Passive Voice :-

When something had done to the substance in a sentence it is said to be in Passive voice.

Object + Verb + By + Subject

Rules for changing active voice into passive voice :-

✯ The object of the verb is changed to the subject position and the subject to object position.

✯ Verb in active voice is changed into its passive form (Past participle form).

✯ While changing we have to aware of verb.

✯ In active voice the subject is initial position.

✯ In passive voice the object is initial position.

✯ The object in active voice becomes subject in passive voice.

✯ The subject in active voice becomes object in passive voice.

✯ In passive voice, 'by' is placed before the subject.

✯ If there are modal verbs in the sentence, then the form is

modal verb + be + past participle

✯ The pronouns in active voice are also changed accordingly like I becomes me, they becomes them etc.

✯ For order making sentences, the passive form is

let + object + be + past participle

Active and passive voice -

• verb(s) - am/is/are + verb(ed)

• verb(ed) - was/were + verb(ed)

• will + V1 - will + be + verb(ed)

• am/is/are + gerund - am/is/are + being + verb(ed)

• was/were + gerund - was/were + being + verb(ed)

• have/has + verb(ed) - have/has + been + verb(ed)

• had + verb(ed) - had + been + verb(ed)

• modal + V1 - modal + be + verb(ed)

• to + V1 - to + be + verb(ed)

✯ We usually use the passive voice for emphasis.

Example : A tree in our garden was uprooted by the storm.

Here the stress is on the fact that the tree in the garden was uprooted by the storm.

✯ When the identity of the subject is not clear or not known.

Example : I have been invited to their house (By someone)

✯ Some sentences in the active voice have two objects.

• The direct object answers the question whom or what.

• The indirect object answers the question of To whom, or For whom.

Example : He drew a map for Geetha.
