Dussehra is literally the tenth day of Navaratri. When Navratri has its last ninth day, the next day is Dussehra. (Here, Navratri is winter Navratri)
Dussehra is celebrated 20 days before diwali.
Dussehra is celebrated because on this day, Hindu Lord Rama returned to his hometown, Ayodhya, after finishing the demon, Ravana.
Side point :- (What I think Dussehra means दश को हरा that is, killing a person with ten heads)
