The n+l value will be 4.

GIVEN

Electron present in an atomic shell = 14th

TO FIND

n+l value of the given electron:

SOLUTION:

According to Aufbau's rule the electronic configuration for the 14th electron in an atom will be -

 {1s}^{2}  {2s}^{2}  {2p}^{6}  {3s}^{2}  {3p}^{2}

So, the 14th electron is present in the 3p shell.

we know that,

'n' is principal quantum number which represents relative overall energy of each orbital

so, Value of 'n' for p subshell = 3

'l' is azimuthal quantum number which describes the shape of the orbit.

so, value of 'l' for p subshell = 1

Hence, the value for 'n+l' = 3+1 = 4
