A social awareness drive was organized by Vidyaprabodhini College, Mapusa, Goa on 3rd January 2019, in the Seminar Hall of the college. The programme was part of ‘Senior Citizen’s Week’ conducted by college from 2nd – 5th January 2019. The chief guest for the occasion was Dr. Narendra Guha, Director, Goa Health Services.
As part of the drive, the NSS Unit organized an essay writing competition on the topic, ‘Love Expressed is Love Received’. The competition was followed by a dance choreographed by students of the Bachelor Arts on the theme, ‘I Love My Parents’. The dance highlighted the importance of taking care of one’s parents when they are old.
During the valedictory function, the chief guest gave away prizes to the two best students for the essay writing competition, Mr. Mayank Sardessai and Ms. Ankita Varma. He also gave away mementos to the students who participated in the dance. In his address to the students, the chief guest appreciated the NSS Unit and the management of the college for their unique idea of organizing an awareness campaign against oldage homes. He said that in the modern society, many young couple are opting for nuclear families leaving their parents to tend for themselves. While this change is the outcome of globalisation, he said that leaving ones parents in oldage homes is not a solution. Many parents fall ill because of poor infrastructure offered by these homes and unhealthy food that is served. He reminded the students the sacrifices that parents make in order to nurture their children in the right path.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks proposed by the Principal, Mr. Vivek Prabhudesai.
