N₂ and O₂ are converted into monocations, N⁺₂ and O⁺₂
respectively. Which of the following statements is wrong ?

(b) In O₂, the O—O bond order increases
(c) In O₂, paramagnetism decreases

Answer:

The correct answer is (D).

Explanation:

The option (D) N+2 becomes diamagnetic is incorrect because diamagnetism occurs due to the absence of unpaired electrons. But in the option (D) the electrons are not absent they are rather present. Thus the process could be better defined as paramagnetic i.e. N+2.

Thus when N2 and O2 are converted into monocations i.e. N+2 and O+2 the rest three options will be applicable.
