भारतीय जनजीवन में नदियों का योगदान इतना अधिक है कि इस विषय पर कितने ही ग्रंथ लिखे जा सकते हैं। धार्मिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक, व्यापारिक, पर्यटन, स्वास्थ्य, कृषि, शैक्षिक, औषधि और न जाने कितने क्षेत्र हैं जो हमारी नदियों से सीधे-सीधे जुडे हुए हैं। किसी भी अन्य सभ्यता से बहुत लंबे समय तक हमने नदियों को धर्म से जोड कर इन्हें स्वच्छ और पवित्र भी बनाए रखा। यह किसी उपलब्धि से कम नहीं है, लेकिन आधुनिकता के साथ शुरू हुई उपभोक्तावाद की अंधी दौड और उसमें बिना सोचे-समझे सभी के कूद पडने का नतीजा यह हुआ कि हम अपनी सांस्कृतिक विरासत को स्वयं ही नष्ट करने पर तुल गए।
सदियों से भारत में नदियों की पूजा करने की परंपरा रही है। हिंदू जन नदियों को भगवान के स्वरूप मानते रहे हैं। कई नदियों को देवी मानकर उनकी पूजा की जाती रही है। नदियों की पूजा की यह परंपरा तो अभी भी चली आ रही है, लेकिन यह परंपरा शुरू होने के मूल में निहित भावना का लोप सा हो गया है। हमारे यहां लगभग सभी नदियों को आज भी मां के रूप में सम्मान दिया जाता है। गंगा ही नहीं, देश की दूसरी नदियों के प्रति भी हमारे मन में गहरा सम्मान है। चूंकि सम्मान का यह भाव हमें हमारी परंपरा से मिला है, इसीलिए इसे सीखने के लिए हमें किसी विश्वविद्यालय या संस्थान में जाने की जरूरत नहीं होती। किसी छोटे-बडे धक्के से यह सम्मान टूटता भी नहीं। क्योंकि यह हमारे संस्कार का हिस्सा बन चुका है।

This is nothing short of an accomplishment, but the blind run of consumerism that began with modernity and jumping into it thoughtlessly resulted in the destruction of our own cultural heritage.
There has been a tradition of worshiping rivers in India for centuries. The Hindus consider the rivers to be the image of God. Many rivers are worshiped as goddesses. This tradition of worship of rivers is still going on, but it has lost the spirit inherent in the beginning of this tradition. Almost all the rivers in our country are still respected as mothers. Not only Ganga, we also have deep respect for other rivers of the country. Since we have received this sense of respect from our tradition, we do not need to go to any university or institute to learn it. This honor does not break even with a small push. Because it has become part of our culture.
