Na is soft but NaCl is hard because:-

#NaCl is an ionic solid.. hence, it has a strong ionic bonds. whereas ,Na is a metallic solid, where it has only weaker METALLIC BONDS.

Na is a metal which is soft in nature when exist in atomic form or free form. but when it forms a bond(ionic) with Cl its bond get stronger.. which increases intermolecular force between then. hence NaCl is hard
