Neurons have a large number of extensions called dendrites. They often look likes branches or spikes extending out from the cell body. It is primarily the surfaces of the dendrites that receive chemical messages from other neurons. One extension is different from all the others, and is called the axon.

तंत्रिका उत्तक की कोशिकाओं को न्यूरॉन कहते हैं । प्रत्येक न्यूरॉन में 3 भाग होते हैं : साइटोन(cytone) , द्रुमवर्ध(Dendrons) और तंत्रिकाक्ष(axon) । न्यूरॉन की कोशिकाओं में केंद्रक तथा साइटोप्लाज्म होते हैं । इसमें लंबे और पतले बालों जैसी सूक्ष्म शाखाएं निकली होती हैं। इसमें एक लंबा बेलनाकार प्रवर्ध होता है जिसे एक्साॅन (axon) कहते हैं और बहुत सारी सूक्ष्म शाखा वाले प्रवर्धो को डेंडराइट्स(dendrites) कहते हैं। एक न्यूरॉन 1 मीटर लंबी हो सकती है।
