Because Na +1 and Cl -1 ions.
So the bonds formed are ionic not covalent.

BCOZ WHEN THE METALS WILL BE REACTING WITH THE NON METALS THEN THE ELECTRONS OF THE METALS WILL BE TRANSFERRING TO THE NON METALS AND THUS THE IONS ARE FORMED. AND THE COMPOUND WHICH IS FORMED BY THIS PROCESS IS IONIC COMPOUND SO WHEN Na-sodium and metal reacts with non metal Cl-chloride.then the ions form as a result the compound -NaCl is an ionic compound.
