b.Nadir Shah, the Shah of Persia invaded the Mughal Empire, eventually attacking Delhi in March. His army had easily defeated the Mughals at the battle at Karnal and would eventually capture the Mughal capital.

  • He ordered a qatle-aam(general massacre) of Delhi  
  • His soldiers killed 20,000 children, men and women within six hours on March 22, 1739.
  • As he occupied Delhi, he ordered to struck coins with his name and reading of royal khutba at Jama Masjid and other mosques.
  • He had ordered the killing because he had set up the price ceiling and when his soldiers went to Paharganj grain market to enforce the decree, the merchants refused to follow it. It led to violence and anti-persian xenophobia. Persian moving in the city were killed.
  • Nadir Shah was furious due to killing of his soldiers and ordered qatle-aam to reassert his power.
