Nalanda University is considered to be one of the first Universities ever recorded in history. The ruins of the university can be found in present-day Bihar, India. It has been designated a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site.
It is believed to be a Buddhist learning center from 427 to 1197 CE.
It was found that some of the buildings were built by Ashoka The Great, which indicates the Buddist Leaning.
Also, many historians believed that the university was at its prime during the reign of Gupta King Sakraditya that is between 415 to 455 CE.
At its peak, it had about 10,000 students and 2000 teachers. It attracted many great minds from the far corner of the world, people from Persia, China, and even Greece would come to enlighten themselves with the vast knowledge they can acquire.
In 1193 it was destroyed by the Turkic Muslim invaders under Bakhtiyar Khalji. The burning of the great libraries of the Nalanda University by the Mughals is a legend. It burned for three months after being set to fire, all the monks were driven off, and; almost every construction was destroyed by the Mughals.
Among the ruins that survive, the Surya Mandir is the most prominent.
