REASONS
1. The stalemate in the northern colonies. British General William Howe had control of New York City, and passed it on to Sir Henry Clinton, while John Burgoyne was unable to reach and destroy Patriot George Washington’s army downstate. Clinton lacked the men to do it himself, and Saratoga prevented reinforcement from Canada.
2. The wearing down and defeat in the South. Royalist General Charles Cornwallis suffered serious attrition pursuing guerillas and the fabian tactics of American Nathaniel Greene. Their climactic battle at Guildford Courthouse was a Pyrrhic royal victory, making Cornwallis withdraw to Yorktown. It was there that the French could finally intervene, cutting off naval support at the battle of Chesapeake, and joining up with Washington to besiege and capture Cornwallis.
3. Finally, it was a world war. British hegemony after the Seven Years war rankled not only its enemies in France and Spain, but other powers like the Netherlands. The British were fighting for their possessions not only in North America, but in the Caribbean, Gibraltar (The British occupied fortress was besieged), and India where the French teamed up with Hyder Ali of Mysore against the British East India Company. This stretched British resources to the limit. The British navy, ordinarily decisive, was spread thin against inferior fleets attacking all British possessions.
4. There was an economic disaster behind the Revolution itself. Not only was Europe recovering from the Seven Years World War a generation before, but there were recent disasters. A bank collapse in 1772, combined with horrible winters and paltry harvests, led to the British government bailing out its main companies and trying to recoup losses by taxation without changing its political structure to accommodate the colonies. The British could not afford such a long war, especially with the French. It ended with every participant bankrupt, leading to the French Revolution ten years later.
