A metal tarnishes due to oxidation. It forms and oxide layer on the metal.

eg: copper, when new it is shiny, but after a time outside, it goes green.

Another example is Iron

Answer: Tarnish can be defined as a thin layer of corrosion which forms over metals such as silver, brass, copper and some other metals. It is a phenomenon in which only the surface is involved, which means that only the top layer of the metal is affected and this prevents the underlying layers from reacting. Tarnish is a effect of chemical reaction between metal and non- metal. It happens because of oxygen and sulfide. It is not always caused by oxygen but can sometimes caused due to the effect of other gases. Example silver gets tarnished due to hydrogen sulfide. It appears as a dull grey, or black over metals.
